Network Engineer Required
Overall Role Description
The role is to provide high level technical support on all matters relating to networking and security in AlwaysON's core, corporate and customer networks. In addition to this, the successful applicant will also be required to be involved in the maintenance and growth of AlwaysON's collocation facilities.
Reporting directly to the Technical Services Manager, you will be expected to proactively monitor the core and customer network environments. Should any issues arise you will be involved in the timely resolution of any incident with a view to minimising disruption and exceeding customer expectations. You will assist in the planning and implementation the development of the core network. You will be required to consult with customers and AlwaysON's pre-sales department on the design of customer's solutions.
On site work will be a feature of the role - although 90% of duties will be office based in Reading, travel to AlwaysON's data-centre collocations in London, Docklands, will be required, as will occasional visits to customer offices. You will be involved in the installation and removal of hardware from the data-centres and will be required to maintain the high installation standard.
In order to fulfil these duties a detailed understanding of the AlwaysON network, customer networks and the underlying technologies will be required.
You must have a clean driving license and access to a vehicle. This will be required for the purposes of collocation visits and installations.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Take overall pro-active responsibility for technical support / network issues arising within the AlwaysON core network and key customer networks.
- To resolve customer incidents / restore service in a timely manner wherever possible within SLA / agreed timescales and to work with the Help Desk to ensure the correct action for an incident is taken and customers are left satisfied
- Offer support on networking issues to colleagues on the Help Desk and to advise colleagues with different specialities
- Identify any weaknesses or deficiencies within a network design, make colleagues aware and be actively involved in proposing solutions - Checkpoint (with particular attention to Nokia and secure platform environments) & Fortinet
- IOS IPSec - encryption domains, VRF aware IPSec, VTIs and DMVPNs
- SSL VPN
- Load balancing technologies
- Linux OS
- Microsoft server environments
- HP Prolient server technology including ILO
- Wireshark
- Network monitoring applications

Desirable Skills and Experience
- Qualified to CCNA/CCNP level or equivalent levels of experience
- 3 years + in a network support role in ISP environment
- Excellent knowledge of Cisco IOS and related hardware technologies
- Experience with the design of virtualized layer 2 & 3 networks utilizing Cisco hardware
- Understanding the difficulties and experience of integrating multivendor technologies
- Understanding the internet routing environments
- Appreciation of the nuances of running a converged network service
- Basic knowledge of VoIP and RTP technologies
- Awareness of cabling standards / maintaining existing cable infrastructures including day to day patching, etc
- Able to complete a baseline security clearance to include a criminal records check
- Experience in a customer facing role - sometimes working closely with important figures within customer organisations
- Ability to work to deadlines and under extreme pressure
- Commercial awareness
- Strong team building skills - able to integrate with a well established group
- Self motivating - able to work alone or in team
